When my nephews, Billy and Joshua White, were ages 9 and 7 respectively, we used to talk about all sorts of things on our way to and from our local park. We got into a discussion about penmanship one day. I explained to them that penmanship was a word used to describe a person's handwriting. If the handwriting was good, it was good penmanship, or, if bad, then bad penmanship. It was how well or how badly a person's handwriting was.

The subject somehow turned to what Aunt Penny wanted to do with her life. I shared with my nephews then that it was my dream to publish a literary magazine for women - a magazine where women could submit their stories, poetry and personal essays and share them with other women, if not the rest of the world at large. I mentioned that I had yet to come up with a name for this magazine. To which my oldest nephew, Billy, quickly responded, "Penwomanship."

Thus, the title of this literary publication was born.

My nephews are now 15 and 13 and that should give you an idea of how long this publication has been germinating in my brain. But I am now ready and capable of offering this publication to women everywhere, not only as an outlet for their creative writing, but also as a literary reader for those who wish to read the works of women.
