Wedding Song
by Gilda Griffith Brown
Am I beautiful?
Does my heart say it?
Does it flutter against your berry tinged lips?
Are my tears your pearls?
Have you seen me twirl for you,
against you but seldom touching--
just isolated sparks of a fire
that sears the senses with its promise?
Summer walks away with little ceremony,
and the golden days approach
and coattails into winter with the often told story of the sweetest birth.
Here I will stay put and wait, with barely a breath,
for the taking off of the shoe.
Dare I anticipate the moment?
Is it but a dream?
Does God dream?
No. Therefore, I shall await the promise.
Oh, hurry Spring, for in my head I hear the wedding song of the sweet Jesus Bird.
There is a vision of outstretched arms, and we have a witness.
Bless this day sacred and holy.
A bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments
and a bride adorneth herself with her jewels,
The earth bringeth forth her bud, and the Jesus Bird sings a wedding song.
Oh Preacher Man—I will love him forever.
Bless this day, sacred and holy.
Oh! Preacher Man, I will love Him forever.
