Two Poems
by Eddie Edwards Draper
Mississippi River ~ Queen Of My Heart
What a great marriage we've had
We've traveled from Minnesota
All the way to New Orleans
Queen of my heart, my beautiful river
You've cuddled me around every bend
Your gentle ebb and flow
Has laid me on your levees
As we embraced along your banks.
I hope our journey never ends
As we roll out to sea
My outstretched wake will follow you
Queen of my heart, my river and me.
You call me Mississippi, I call you Queen
Hand in hand we travel
Two tug boats in the night
Remember those ol' paddle wheels?
We made the current turn
Beneath those wooden swirls.
Every port we ever saw
We never stopped
We always flowed, my river and me.
Our journey's almost over
Someday we'll start anew
Beginnings never end
For my ol' River Queen and me.

That's All That's Left To Do
My dearest Suzanna
Vicksburg is falling all around us
The Yankees took the river
We have no food, no supplies.
This may be my last letter to you, my love,
I don't know what tomorrow will bring,
We are cold and hungry
Some of the guys killed a horse tonight.
I just could not eat "Ole Satin,"
Three slices of bacon was all I had.
I miss your Southern smile and hugs.
A bunch of us are breaking rank tomorrow,
We are walking north. No shoes.
That's all that's left to do.
The cannon balls keep us awake.
The tents leak. Such a relentless rain.
Please hug our little Jessica.
Daddy's coming home.
This war is hell
And writing this is tearing me apart.
My Suzanna,
I miss you and I love you,
And that's all that's left to do.
