Two Poems
by Eddie Edwards Draper

THE WORLDLY LIGHT

You don't know what life is
        eight months going nine-
Not yet a year has passed your eyes
but you will know in time--
        Yes, we will protect you
        forget sorrow - forget crime--
        A parent is an umbrella
thru the ages - thru all time--
        Ecstasy as morning breaks
        no tears at mooring night--
A tender hand will always shade
        you from the worldly light--

IT'S ONLY LIFE

          Just a plaintiff
          in the trial of life
          Juries' conscience
          often fails
And sends a coffin - to a man
whose only sin - no bail--
          Death watch follows
          every step
          Aghast, the angels
          float to neigh-
          And holy nights
          can't save a man
          whose destiny is thine--
          Innocence recalls
          a kinder day
          Too tired to try
          the break and pain-
          And one resolve
          no trial can break-
          that justice
          is a two-faced lane--
