Two Poems
by Eddie Edwards Draper

OH DISTANT STAR

          We discovered a distant star
          one fair and furlough night
Amidst a plasm of the realm
          a nebula's delight---

          All beside us
          heart's a vast
          New moon rising
          no overcast---

          Honey dripping from our breath
          passion on the lam
          A cavalcade of romance
          beneath the astral ram---

          Othello spoke
          I swore I heard
          Thrice voices from afar--
          An echo of a semblance
          Too far yet near
          our star---

          Oh universe-
          our only eyes--
          Our whispered love could hear
          The daunting twinkle from afar
          we fell in love
          yon distant star---

UPON THE CANDLED NIGHT

    Married on a preacher's morn
    open eyed - undazed -
    Two night's journey
    carriage takes
us far - we cuddle near---

Remember when the wick had died
    upon the candled night
    We swath in robes
    moon barely seen
    upon the candled night---

    And I can only swear
    my love-
    As closeness holds us tight---
    The cloister can't
    condemn our love
    upon the candled night---
