Brother Star, Sister Moon

STAR: Listen to me, Sister Moon.
Can you hear me, Sister Moon?

MOON: Yes, I hear you, Brother Star,
But you’re talking from afar.

STAR: Will you help me, little one,
With a big job to be done?

MOON: You know I will. Just tell me
What to do. Won’t you tell me?

STAR: Help me brighten up the sky.
Three wise kings are passing by.
I have led them from the East–-
Three wise men on camel beasts.
They are wearing rings of gold
On their hands. Their crowns are old.
Golden, glowing Sister Moon,
They’ll be riding by you soon.
Please help me fill the dark sky
With pretty light from up high.
Shine bright in the night, Sister Moon,
While the angels sing a tune.

MOON: You know I’ll help you, Brother Star.
Tell my why they’ve traveled far.

STAR: They are bringing precious things
To the little King of Kings.
Spices and perfume and gold–-
These are the gifts I was told.
For the greatest king of all.
A baby in a cattle stall.
Shine your sweet light from on high.
Soon the three kings will ride by.

MOON: See my light, see how I shine.
Both of us are looking fine.

STAR: We will celebrate the birth
Of God’s Son sent to the earth.

MOON: Shine bright, shine bright, Brother Star,
As you travel near from far.

STAR: I’ll shine on the baby boy,
Who will fill our hearts with joy.
I will shine my brightest light
On the new king boy tonight.

MOON: Glitter, shine, sparkle, and glow
From up above to down below.


Star and Moon Cookies

2/3 cup shortening
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
2 large eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 1/2 cups self-rising flour
more flour
colored sugar

Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs and beat the mixture thoroughly. Add vanilla. Add the flour; mix well. Chill.

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Roll the dough thin on a lightly floured surface. Cut with lightly floured round and star-shaped cookie cutters. Sprinkle them with colored sugar.

Bake on ungreased cookie sheets until done, about 5 minutes.

Last year at my family's reunion everybody was telling whoppers and eating all kinds of good food. While sitting there and enjoying the food and fellowship, I had two ideas. One was to write a book of recipes, mostly acquired from my family and the other was to write a book of stories--just anecdotes instead of real short stories--about my family.
