Phil Bratcher's Poems - IV
A Worm Can Learn
A man observes a worm
And knows
The worm has learned
How not to be afoot
Wise to match his time
A mystic of the earth
Will make his road
A crooked line--
Not straight and proud
Nor the bottom of his boot

Layin-By Time
Seed-time to harvest
We always called layin-by
While most things sprouted
We'd re-sharpen ploughs
Along with our tongues
For spinnin tales
At the Spring dance
We called Big Apple--
The rare occasion we might
Flirt with and even touch
Some tender choice
Young swung with older
And vice-versa
Even a few twelve-year olds
Became men with
Their first kiss on
Girls slightly taller
All but Cow Jean's baby
With those stubby legs and fingers--
The retarded girl Miss Jean had
That one hard winter
But there was plenty merriment
This season of the year
For everybody when
All our work turned to profit--
Seeds sproutin like magic,
Prayers prayed, boots oiled and
Blistered hands all salved
Nothin else to do but wait
At layin-by . . .

Things That Thaw
Inland harbor frost, flower bulbs and blackberry winter-- things that thaw this time of year along with the occasional grudge and other matters you were wrong about.
